CJP complains to Karnataka Police against Pragya Thakur’s hate speech Thakur was booked merely hours after the complaint was sent

On December 28, Citizens for Justice and Peace complained to the SP of Shivamogga and DGP of Karnataka to register their complaint against BJP MP and terror accused, Pragya Singh Thakur. Merely hours later, Thakur was booked under the IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 153B (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 268 (Public nuisance), 295A (Outraging religious sentiments), 298 (deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of any person), 504 (Intentionally insulting a person) and 508 (inducing person to believe that he will be rendered an object of the Divine displeasure). This FIR was filed at the instance of HS Sundresh, the President of Shivamogga District Congress Committee.
In the complaint, CJP highlighted how Thakur’s speech at Hindu Jagarana Vedike’s South Region annual conference in Shivamogga was inciteful, provocative and egging people on to take up arms against the minority community. In her words, ““Keep weapons in your homes, if nothing else, at least keep the knives used to cut vegetables, sharp. I am speaking clearly. In our homes as well knives should be sharp. They Killed our Harsha with a knife. They have stabbed our bravehearts, workers of Bajrang Dal, of BJP and workers of Yuva Morcha. So we should also keep our knives sharp as we don’t know when the situation will arise. When our vegetables are cut properly, then our enemies’ heads will also get cut properly”. She also said Hindus should “answer those involved in love jihad the same way”.
CJP is dedicated to finding and bringing to light instances of Hate Speech, so that the bigots propagating these venomous ideas can be unmasked and brought to justice. To learn more about our campaign against hate speech, please become a member. To support our initiatives, please donate now!
CJP wrote that “while she (Thakur) does not explicitly mention ‘muslim community’, the fact that she has said “they killed Harsha” makes it clear who the incitement is against, since the accused in Harsha’s murder case are Muslims.”
Through the letter complaint, CJP sought swift and stringent action against Thakur under certain sections of the IPC while pointing out that Shivamogga SP Mr. GK Mithun Kumar while speaking to The Hindu had said that he would take actions against Thakur if he received any complaint against her.
