Neeraj Sahay , a professor at Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute SRFTI), was arrested in Thane, Maharashtra, on Tuesday evening, around seven weeks after a student accused him of forcing her into sex.
The Panchasayer police in Kolkata had registered a case of rape under IPC 376 on December 24, but Sahay went missing. Police on Tuesday said that he shuttled between three states and changed his mobile phones constantly to evade the dragnet. Finally , it was a tip from a local source in Kolkata that led to his arrest.
“Our team began tracking his phones. We prepared a list of numbers he might contact. Based on the analysis of these numbers, we tracked him down to Thane. There we took the help of local police and arrested him.Interestingly, Sahay has a home in Thane but no one in his family had any clue that he was wanted in such an im portant case in Kolkata,“ said a senior investigator. DCsouth suburban Santosh Pandey confirmed the arrest but said he would comment after the accused is brought to Kolkata.
Another officer said that Sahay is expected to be in Kolkata by Thursday evening. Five officers from Kolkata Police are now in Thane.
TOI was the first to report the complaint against the professor. The student who made the complaint told TOI on Tuesday: “I am happy that he has been arrested even though it took a long time. I hope the next time there is a complaint of rape, police will act more quickly so that we can trust the system with women’s issues like this.“ Sahay is the SRFTI’s department of motion picture photographycinematography .
