Hate Watch: Assam man lynched for allegedly stealing cow 14 persons have been arrested

Another shameful incident of lynching by cow vigilantism has come to light, this  time in Assam. A man, Naju Ali was lynched by a mob in Sivasagar distrcit’s Bamunpukhuri tea garden area.

Superintendent of Police of Sivasagar, Shuvrajyoti Borah confirmed the incident and said: “A group of people had beaten a man identified as Naju Ali on the suspicion of cow stealing there. After that he was taken to a local hospital and later shifted to the Jayasagar civil hospital.” Ali succumbed to his injuries. The incident was reported on February 7.

The police have arrested 14 persons for the assault after initial inquiries and a further investigation is being conducted.Meanwhile, locals of that area staged a protest outside Nazira police station over the arrest of the 14 persons saying that Ali was accused of cow theft earlier as well and was arrested for the same, more than once, reported Assam Tribune.

The accused include Deepak Kurmi, Munna Kawar, Shivshankar Kawar, Nitesh Bauri, Jiten Ravi Das Puneshwar Kurmi, Shankar Kawar, Ramesh Tanti, Mani Ravi Das, Ajay Singh Rajput, Uma Saura, Basanti Kumri, Ashraf Garh and Deepali Munda, Reported Guwahati Plus.

Earlier incidents

In May 2017, Cousins Abu Hanifa, 16, and Raijuddin Ali, 18 were lynched to death in Nagaon by a mob of over 100 men.

In July 2016, two persons who had allegedly picked up cows and put them in a truck in a tea estate near Dergaon in Golaghat district, were thrashed by local people; one of them, Jonti Ali, died, reported Indian Express

In April 2019, Shaukat Ali (48) was thrashed by a mob and forced to eat cooked pork in front of a few policemen for selling beef at his tea stall at the Madhupur weekly market in Biswanath Chariali, reported The Wire.
