MUMBAI: Preliminary investigations have revealed that the four men arrested for allegedly gang-raping and murdering a 45-year-old woman in Vasai early on Monday have no prior criminal record, said the police.
An investigating officer said the police were baffled to find that none of the four accused – i dentified as Sangamlal Maurya, 46, Shankar Salunke, 43, Shailendra Kumar Dubey, 23 and Anand Chavan, 19 – who committed the gruesome crime, had prior criminal records.
According to the police, the four accused, who are daily wage labourers, were drinking in the area when the woman reprimanded them.
Minutes later, they allegedly barged into her house, assaulted her husband till he lost consciousness and kidnapped the woman.
They headed to a nearby drain, where they allegedly raped the woman, strangulated her and attempted to dispose of her body near the drain.
