Days after writers took to streets protesting the growing intoler ance, artists have now begun to raise questions. On Tuesday, over 400 artists, including Vivan Sundaram, Anjolie Ela Menon and Subodh Gupta, condemned recent attacks on rationalists and minorities.
The creative bunch of people re leased a statement from the platform of SAHMAT (Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust), expressing concern over fringe elements targeting people at their whims and fancies.
“The contemptuous comments about the religious minorities and Dalits made by those within the government confirm that there is little difference between the RSS-BJP mainstream and supposed fringe elements,“ reads the statement.
The artists, also including the likes of London-based Anish Kapoor, K G Subramanyan, Nilima Sheikh and Krishen Khanna, called for a “challenge to the divisive forces through varied forms of appeal and protest, articulation and refusal“.
