The violence has subsided in the troubled Churachandpur district of Manipur where a clash between the security forces and an irate mob erupted since Monday killing seven persons and injuring 20 others even as curfew continued in the troubled district to ensure that the violence does not escalate.
Although there is no report of any fresh violence reported from anywhere in the district on Thursday, yet the tension seems to be simmering, particularly in the Kuki and Naga-dominated hill districts with the agitating people refusing to come to a settlement with the Government over the issue and demanding a separate administrative system for the hill districts of Manipur.
“There is no report of any violence since yesterday. However, curfew has been on to ensure that the situation does not deteriorate further. Security forces had been put on high alert to thwart further violence in the district,” said Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner, L Haokip.
