Man beaten in custody: HC orders probe

In yet another case of violence in police custody wherein a sub inspec tor allegedly thrashed a 30-year old, a single bench of high court on Wednesday ordered the Assistant Commissioner of Police to inquire into the matter. The order comes following a petition filed by the victim, Vijay Rabari, alleging he was beaten up by SI HK Shrimali at Sola police station on the intervening night of January 13 and 14.His lawyer, Vaibhavi Nanavati, challenged the FIR by Shrimali.

As per Rabari’s petition, he and his friend were riding his motorcycle when they were allegedly hit by a car near Sola Bridge. The car was being rashly-driven by Shrimali. The duo intercepted the car near Gota Bridge; the two parties got into in a conflict. Shrimali called a traffic police constable to the spot, took Rabari to the police station and locked him. In custody, he was handcuffed, stripped and beaten with sticks and belt through the night. The next morning, on being produced at the magistrate court, Rabbari complained of police torture and showed his injuries marks.He was referred to Civil Hospital.
