New Delhi, Feb. 24: Delhi police today said they would seek the custody of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar again, following the surrender of fellow students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, and asked for his bail petition to be deferred.
In their status report submitted in court, the police have described Kanhaiya as the “organiser” of the February 9 event on the campus where “anti-national” slogans were raised.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Kanhaiya in Delhi High Court, had contended that the student leader should be granted bail because the status report filed by the police today had no evidence of him raising any anti-India slogans.
However, additional solicitor-general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the police, said they needed to confront Kanhaiya with the other two students and would seek his custody. After five days in police custody, Kanhaiya was sent to Tihar Jail on February 17. The police can keep an accused in custody up to 15 days.
