Navi Mumbai:Acting on a tip-off provided by activists of the VHP and Bajrang Dal about an alleged beef consignment being transported towards Mumbai along the Sion-Panvel highway , the police laid a trap at Kharghar toll plaza on Friday and waylaid three tempos.
Slaughtered pieces of multiple cattle were found in the tempos. Four persons–Mohammad Rais Qureshi (31), Anwar Shaikh (24), Abdul Shaikh (25) and Mohammad Qureshi (22), all Kurla residents–were arrested.
An RSS volunteer, Shivam Kumar Singh, a Kharghar resident, said, “The meat, from at least 25-30 cattle, appears to be beef. Cattle heads too were found. The meat was being taken to the city despite a beef ban. It was hidden under tarpaulin sheets and behind milk carrier racks. There were ten people in the three tempos; all were detained but only four have been arrested as the other six claimed they were passengers who had taken a lift.“
