SC seeks reply of Centre, cops on plea against lawyers seen boasting about Kanhaiya assault

New Delhi, Feb. 26 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday asked the the Centre and Delhi Police for their response to a petition seeking a special investigation and contempt action against three lawyers who had assaulted JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in a court complex on February 17.

A bench of Justices J. Chelameswar and A.M. Sapre also issued notice to the three lawyers allegedly caught in a sting operation “boasting and bragging” about their exploit, and fixed the matter for hearing on March 4.

The plea has sought “suo motu contempt proceeding” against lawyers Vikram Singh Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma on the ground that they have allegedly been caught on camera talking about the attacks.

It also sought a direction to set up a special investigation team to probe the physical assaults on Kanhaiya, teachers fellow students of Jawaharlal Nehru University and defence lawyers on February 15 and 17 by some advocates in the Patiala House courts complex during the hearing of the sedition case involving the JNUSU leader.
