The Agra police Friday arrested three accused, including the alleged shooter, named in the murder of VHP leader Arun Kumar Mahaur who was shot dead Thursday in Mantola police station area of the city. The trio —- Raja, his elder brother Shahrukh (21) and neighbour Abid —- were produced before a local court, which sent them to judicial custody. Two other accused, Imtiyaz and Dilshad, are still absconding.
Police ruled out VHP’s allegation that the murder was a fallout of the anti-cow slaughter campaign that Mahaur had been leading and claimed that Shahrukh, a labourer, had fired at the Dalit leader following an altercation that occurred between them on Wednesday and Thursday.
Circle Officer, Chhatta area, B S Tyagi said none of the accused are involved in any kind of slaughter trade.
Station Officer, Mantola police station, Lekhraj Singh said the murder was fallout of heated arguments between Shahrukh and Mahaur on two consecutive days. As per the preliminary investigation, the duo had entered in verbal duel three days ago when Shahrukh was standing near VHP leader’s house along with some friends, the SO said.
