Louise Arbour, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for International Migration, spoke at the stocktaking meeting on migration being held in Mexico. Arbour said the Global Compact for migration, which will be an intergovernmentally negotiated agreement, presents “an opportunity to reorient the often-toxic narrative against migrants towards a more accurate narrative on migration that recognizes its overwhelming positive impact, and is prepared to address its challenges in a sober, realistic way,” UN News reported. Arbour also highlighted the need to be “realistic” in understanding how migration occurs, and emphasised that it should not be narrowed down to “simple, binary categories” like refugees vs. economic migrants, and security vs. human rights.
