Activist Trupti Desai, who has been spearheading the campaign for women’s entry into the sanctum of Shani Shingnapur temple, has received a threat to her life. An anonymous letter sent to Desai has warned her to stay away from the agitation or she “would meet the same fate as rationalist Narendra Dabholkar“.
The Sahakarnagar police have registered a noncognizable offence against an unidentified person. About four days ago, Desai had lodged a police complaint against five persons, including two from a mobile networking group and the rest from Shani Shingnapur, Mumbai and Delhi, for allegedly circulating defamatory posts against her on social media. Desai told TOI, “The letter was sent to my residential address in Dhankawdi on Friday . I will not get scared by such tricks. I will continue to fight.“
The one-and-a-half page letter, written in Marathi, says, “The work you have started to end gender bias by breaking a custom is creditable. But why have you chosen Shani Shingnapur for gender equality?“
