PRESS RELEASE: CJP trustees express dismay and shock at Teesta Setalvad’s arrest Trustees issue statement expressing complete confidence in the human rights defender

In wake of journalist, educationist and human rights defender Teesta Setalvad’s shocking arrest, the trustees of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) have come out in full support of the organisation’s secretary.
In a statement issued on July 5, the trustees said, “We, the trustees of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), are dismayed and shocked by the recent FIR lodged against Teesta Setalvad and others, as also her consequent arrest.”
They further said, “We have been part of CJP for a long time and have known Teesta even longer. We have complete confidence in her integrity, and wholeheartedly support the litigation concerning the Gujarat Carnage of 2002, including the Zakia Jafri Case.”
Lauding Setalvad’s commitment to human rights as well as the law of the land, they said, “Teesta is an activist who always believed in the rule of law and our Constitution, and has boldly carried out her activities in compliance with these. Even in the past when she was hounded, we have stood by her and we continue to do so today.”
They expressed hope that the charges against her will be dropped soon, and she will be released soon.
