IIMC Dalits lodge plaint against `casteist’ peers

The controversial suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad University has found an echo at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at Delhi. Posts on social media using abusive language against Dalit and tribal students have prompted around 17 IIMC students to complain to the information and broadcasting ministry .
The affected students have also moved the National Commission for Scheduled Castes over what they said is an attempt to spread “ill-will” on the campus and their protests have resulted in the government seeking a report.
I&B secretary Sunil Arora on Tuesday ordered that a report be submitted within a week. The two students who wrote the offending blogs have since apologized, sources said. The institute has also issued in structions to set up an SCST cell to address such issues in the future. According to sour ces, I&B joint secretary Mihir Kumar Singh visited the cam pus on Wednesday to take stock of the situation.
