Iceland makes Equal Pay for women law

According to a CBS News report, Iceland has made it illegal for women to be paid less than men for the same job. CBS News said that all government bodies and companies with more than 25 employees are required to get an official certification indicating that they dispense equal pay for an equal value of work, else they could be fined. Iceland’s parliament, which CBS News said is approximately half female, unveiled the legislation on International Women’s Day in 2017. The law went into force on January 1, 2018. According to CBS News, in October, several thousand women in Iceland left work at 2.38 pm to protest the gender pay gap; that particular time was chosen because women’s groups’ calculations indicate that it is the time after which women effectively work for free every day. The World Economic Forum has ranked Iceland at number one for gender equality for the past nine years. Iceland is aiming to eliminate the gender pay gap by the year 2022, CBS News said.
