On May 10, special NIA court in Srinagar granted bail to Sultan in 5 years old UAPA case registered against him in 2019. The court while granting him bail noted that “…the occurrence took place more than five years ago and sufficient time of approximately two and a half months has been given to the investigating agency for the custodial interrogation of the accused applicant… Further detention of the accused person/applicant in custody shall not serve any purpose”.
March 1, 2024
On March 1, Sultan was presented at a local court in Srinagar, which ordered that he remain in police custody pending investigation until March 5.
February 29, 2024
On February 29, 2024, Aasif Sultan was rearrested from his home and sent to police remand in another case of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 1967. Asif was rearrested on the basis of FIR No 19/2019 filed at Police Station Rainawari under Sections 147 and 148 (rioting and punishment for rioting), 149 (offence committed by any member of unlawful assembly), 336 (endangering human life) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), besides Section 13 (advocating, abetting or inciting unlawful activity) of UAPA.
February 27, 2024
On February 27, 2024, Aasif Sultan was released from jail. He was released from Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkarnagar District Prison after five years of detention.
December 2023
On December 7, 2023, Jammu and Kashmir High Court quashed the PSA case against Sultan, calling his detention “illegal and unsustainable.” However, Sultan was not released until February 27, 2024, because he required security clearance.
April 2022
In April 2022, he had been granted bail by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court as it observed that investigative agencies had failed to file evidence linking him to militant groups. However, he was arrested again under the PSA a few days later.
April 5, 2022
Gets bail from NIA court, but not released. He is detained at a police station in Srinagar after being booked under Public Safety Act (PSA). He is then sent to Kot Bhalwal jail.
