Palitana tense after mob clashes with police
01, Oct 2014
Tension mounted in the temple town of Palitana on Tuesday afternoon after the detention of two youths by the police triggered angry protests by a community.
The youths were detained after they started arguing with policemen who had asked them to take away their bike which was obstructing traffic on the main road in the town. As soon as the news of their detention spread, an angry mob gathered outside the police station and started pelting stones. A police vehicle was also ransacked by the mob. With the situation threatening to spiral out of control, police lobbed two teargas shells to disperse crowds. Within minutes, all business establishments downed their shutters and the town wore a deserted look.
