Low Security At Metro Cinema Underpass
In one of the better-managed pedestrian subways of the city , a college girl was molested in the underpass at the Metro Cinema junction by a drug addict around noon on January 30.The incident came to light only on Saturday after her friends and parents convinced her to lodge a complaint.
The same day , the police arrested a 22-year-old, Mohammed Hussain, who was found loitering in the subway . “On Saturday , the survivor accompanied her mother to the subway after she insisted on visiting the spot. They found the accused loitering as if he was looking for a target. She immediately called the police and our team picked him up,“ said sub-inspector Rahul Mokhate of the Azad Maidan police station. The police said Hussain is from Vithalwadi, Thane; he is a drug addict and has confessed to the crime.
The incident has forced the city police to write to the BMC–which is in charge of the subway’s administration–to improve lighting in the subway and increase security by also installing CCTV cameras. The survivor, a third-year degree college student, was heading home (Cuffe Parade) and used the subway to board a bus from the stop opposite Framjee Cawasjee Hall. It was a Saturday and the subway was almost deserted, a police officer said.
