Five people were injured after a dispute between two people of different communities over Rs 50 flared up into a communal clash at Durveshpur village, 25 km from Meerut city late Sunday. Stones were pelted and shots fired in the melee, and a police vehicle was damaged. It was reported that the fight started after Mohd Baasit, a resident of Durveshpur, refused to return the money he owed Neetu Singh, a Dalit and fellow-villager. Baasit had refused to return the money to Neetu Singh several times in the past. On Sunday, Neetu Singh’s brother Bittu Singh approached Baasit with a request for the money.
