A Shiv Sena shaka pramukh, identified as Shashikant Ganpat Kalgude, 44, has been arrested for allegedly beating up a woman traffic constable in Thane. Kalgude was produced in court and was remanded in police custody for a day. He was released on bail on Thursday.
However, Sachin Patil, DCP Zone 1, said: “The accused has done a serious offence. So, after he was released today, he has been arrested again under section 110 and was sent back to jail. Such incidents will not be tolerated. Investigation into the case is on.”
According to the police, the incident happened near Teen Haath Naka on Wednesday afternoon. When the 29-year-old constable, who is attached to Wagle Estate traffic department, saw the accused talking on phone while driving, she signalled him to stop the car. But the accused allegedly abused her and drove ahead. The constable ran, stood near the vehicle and asked the accused for his licence. But Kalgude got down from his car and allegedly started abusing her, grabbed her shirt collar and touched her inappropriately. When the constable could not stop the accused from abusing her, she fought back. However, she was allegedly slapped more than five times by the accused. Her name plate was allegedly broken and her shirt was torn by the accused. Some passersby rushed to the spot and stopped the accused. Finally, some traffic police personnel also reached the spot and took the situation under control. Kalgude was driving a Scorpio (MH 06-BE-7340) at the time of the incident.
After the incident went on air, guardian minister Eknath Shinde took to social media to reply to the queries posed. “We respect police and woman and the party is not supporting anyone for the incident,” he said on Twitter.
Kalgude, a resident of Dharamveer Nagar in Thane, has been booked under section 323, 353 and 354 of Indian Penal Code.
