Papua New Guinea police on Thursday entered a former detention centre on Manus Island in an attempt to force out refugees who are refusing to leave, Al Jazeera reported. Refugees said police wrecked their shelters and belongings. Australia pays Papua New Guinea and Nauru, a small Pacific island country, to house several thousand people seeking asylum in Australia. The Manus Island detention centre shuttered in October after Papua New Guinea’s Supreme Court deemed it unconstitutional in 2016.
