A Jadavpur University student has complained to police that right-wing supporters on Facebook have threatened to burn her to death for showing solidarity with JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar. The complainant, Triparna Dey Sarkar, says the trolls and attacks mounted soon after her photographs appeared in newspapers and on news channels leading Tuesday evening’s torch rally at JU.
Sarkar said she was shocked by the flood of threats and abuses on her Facebook page, making filthy comments on her “lifestyle” and saying she deserved to be burned alive.
The attacks began from Tuesday night and intensified on Wednesday. “I did not join the protests to support any kind of secession. Neither did I question why Afzal Guru was hanged. I genuinely believe in my country’s Constitution. Therefore, I do not know why I am being called an anti-national, a deshdrohi,” she said. Preliminary probe has revealed the decision to swarm her profile was taken by a right wing forum called ‘Narendra Modi Sena West Bengal 2’.
