CJP had moved the Supreme court against the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, and the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act, 2018. The Supreme Court on 6th January admitted a petition by CJP challenging the constitutional validity of “Love Jihad” laws passed by the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The ‘Love Jihad laws’ place a burden on individuals to justify their personal decisions to the State authorities throttling their Right to Life and Personal Liberty, Dignity, Freedom of Conscience and Choice. The laws also stand in contravention of the secular fabric of our nation.
The SC issued notice demanding a response in four weeks.
