College students protesting against the suicide of Hyderabad Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Dharavi claimed they were beaten up by RSS members on Sunday. A mob gheroed the local police station in the evening.
According to a student, 200 of them had taken out a rally in support of Vemula. “As our morcha neared Kamgar Nagar, a group came out from the RSS office and started assaulting us,” said a woman protester.
Sources said at least 10 people were thrashed, while three women alleged that they were manhandled and molested them. Among those who sustained injuries were two female students from south Mumbai colleges. The injured were taken to Sion hospital. A protester said, “People attacked us with stones and bamboos. The police are not ready to file a case under the Atrocities Act.” Brushing off the “minor incident”, DCP Mahesh Patil said the situation was now under control.
