On December 23, Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) filed a complaint with the Maharashtra Police as well as the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) against serial hate offender Kalicharan Maharaj, after he made derogatory statements, spewed hate against the Muslims and made strange claims at a protest titled the Hindu Jan Aakrosh Morcha, organised by a Hindu right-wing extremist outfit, Sakal Hindu Samaj, in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.
In the complaint, CJP has highlighted that the communal and hate spewing speech delivered by Kalicharan aka Kalicharan Maharaj, alias Abhijit Dhananjay Sarag espouses a hard, right-wing, exclusionist ideology, through which he has targeted and othered religious minorities of our country, especially the Muslim community.
CJP is dedicated to finding and bringing to light instances of Hate Speech, so that the bigots propagating these venomous ideas can be unmasked and brought to justice. To learn more about our campaign against hate speech, please become a member. To support our initiatives, please donate now!
In the video of the speech, Kalicharan can be heard alleging that “40,000 cases of love jihad take place in India on a daily basis. There have been 35 cases of girls in Delhi. Girls are subdued. Ghosts are born in the stomach of those who go to lay their heads on tombs and tombs. They do vashikaran, black magic on these girls.” He then claimed that such a girl under the black magic of “Love-Jihad” can be cured by “Taking a tooth of a pig and soaking it in water overnight, and in the morning give that water to the girl to drink.”
The complaint has emphasised on how statements such as these lead to spreading of superstitions, promote irrational practices and affect rational, scientific temper of the audience. Furthermore, the complaint stressed that in our current environment, these fake statements have the potential of inciting the consuming audience, and posing a danger to the individuals belonging to minority communities.
It is pertinent to note that this is not the first time that Kalicharan has made troubling claims and Islamophobic comments. In December 2021, speaking at a Dharma Sansad or religious meeting in Chhattisgarh Raipur, Kalicharan had praised Nathuram Godse for assassinating the Father of the Nation in addition to verbally abusing Mahatma Gandhi.
Through the complaint to the DGP, Maharashtra and NCM, CJP sought swift and stringent action against Kalicharan under certain sections of the IPC as well as Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013.
