The Centre on Tuesday cancelled registration of 4,470 NGOs in a fresh crackdown.
Prominent organisations whose Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licences were cancelled include Panjab University (Chandigarh), Gujarat National Law University, Gargi College (Delhi), Lady Irwin College, Vikram Sarabhai Foundation, Kabir — floated by Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Supreme Court Bar Association and Escorts Heart Institute.
Sources said the decision to cancel the registration of these entities under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act has been taken by the Union home ministry after examination of their activities that allegedly include non-filing of annual returns and other anomalies.
