A Marathi theatre producer has filed a police complaint against several residents of the Dahisar society he lives in, saying they attacked his flat late on Thursday and manhandled his family over cooking and eating nonvegetarian food. This comes days after another Maharashtrian was denied a flat in Malad on the grounds that he was a non-vegetarian.
As the news spread, a series of political leaders rallied behind Govind Chavan, 48, protested harassment by vegetarians and called for swift action in the case. About 10-15 residents have been booked for unlawful assembly , rioting and causing hurt. Police said an FIR had been filed on Chavan’s complaint and they are recording statements of the other parties.
