Journalists took out a march to protest the violence against reporters on court premises in Delhi.
The Mumbai Police late Wednesday evening registered an FIR against a person who threatened a senior journalist with “gangrape”, soon after she tweeted asking people to join a protest march at the Mumbai Press Club. The march was organised to protest the violence meted out to reporters on the Patiala House Courts premises in Delhi, when they had gone to cover the hearing in the sedition case against Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar.
The journalist alerted the police on their Twitter handle @MumbaiPolice and was directed to the Azad Maidan police station, where the FIR was registered.
Mumbai Police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni confirmed that an offence had been registered under sections 354 (A) (1) (advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) 506 (2) (criminal intimidation)and 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman)of the Indian Penal Code based on the journalist’s complaint. The abusive tweet put out by accused Amrendra Kumar Singh was in response to a tweet that the senior journalist put out earlier in the day.
