A prolonged dry spell has triggered at least four suicides in western Vidarbha in three days.
Farmers from Wardha district have written to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis that they want to sell their village owing to district administration’s failure in disbursing government aid.
Ananda Kaniram Rathod, a 60-year-old farmer of Bothboden village, 15km from Yavatmal, hanged himself on Thursday . Rathod owned a five acre agricultural farm and owed a considerable amount of money to a bank and lenders.
So far, 36 farmers have committed suicide in this village due to crop failure since 2003.
Two suicides were reported in Washim district on Friday .Sandeep Shelke (22), a progressive farmer from Mungla hanged himself in his field, police said. Durgabai Deshmukh (55), a farmer from Kata, set herself on fire. Crop failure and loan burden are said to be the reasons behind both the suicides.
