Four members of a family were Wednesday hacked to death allegedly by the husband of a 40-year-old woman who had been murdered earlier, in a village under Potka police station in East Singhbhum district, police said. The accused has been arrested. The police said Basko Tudu (45) killed the four to avenge the murder of his wife, who was killed by the elder brother of the victims’ family over allegations of witchcraft on January 15.
“The deceased have been identified as Thapa Tudu (35), his brother Ramesh Tudu (28), Ramesh’s wife Malti Tudu (22) and his sister Sonia Tudu (18),” said Potka police station in-charge Arvind Kumar Yadav. “Basko’s wife Bali was allegedly killed by Shyam Tudu, Thapa’s brother. Shyam has been arrested,” he said.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Musabani) Ajit Kumar Vimal said: “Though Bali was killed over witchcraft allegations, the real motive seems to be a property dispute between Basko and Shyam’s family.”
