Author Shashi Deshpande on Fri day resigned from the Sahitya Aka demi’s gen eral council to protest against its silence on the murder of Kannada writer and rationalist M M Kalburgi.
“Today, I am deeply distressed by the silence of the Akademi on the murder of Professor Kalburgi…a noted scholar and a good and honest human being,“ she said in a letter offering her resignation from the literary body.
Deshpande, who won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1990 and the Padma Shri in 2009, is the latest writer to protest against growing intolerance in the country.
