Mob violence sparked off by Tuesday night’s police crackdown on Patidar protesters in Ahmedabad escalated to such a level on Wednesday that the Anandiben Patel government was forced to call for the Army’s help to maintain law and order. Police and leaders of the ruling BJP were the prime targets of the rioters.
Five columns of the Army carried out a flag march in violence-hit areas of Ahmedabad where curfew was imposed in nine areas.
In the police action that followed the arrest of protest ki ngpin Hardik Patel and the la thicharge at the venue of the Patel rally, at least nine people were killed–four in Ahmeda bad, three in Banaskantha and one in Mehsana as well as a police constable in Surat About 100 others have suffer ed injuries.
