Slight increase in crimes against women

ONLY 75% OF CASES SAW THE ARREST OF ONE OR MORE SUSPECTS IN 2015, COMPARED TO 92% OF CASES IN 2014
MUMBAI: The number of crimes against women registered in Mumbai’s south region rose marginally from 2014, when 322 cases were registered, to 2015, which saw the registration of 347 such cases.
There was a slight decrease in the number of rape case registered, from 50 in 2014 to 46 last year. However, there was also a significant dip in the police’s detection rate for crimes against women.
Only 75% of cases saw the arrest of one or more suspects in 2015, compared to 92% of cases in 2014.
Among the most widely publicized cases was that of a 15-yearold girl who was gang-raped by three people at Girgaum. The girl, who is from Uttar Pradesh, was living with relatives in the city and had gone to Girgaum Chowpatty when she was raped. According to police, one of the accused, Venkatesh Shetty (22), knew the girl and raped her with two of his friends on the pretext of helping her.
