Radhika Vemula, the mother of the late University of Hyderabad (UoH) scholar Rohith Vemula, met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and other politicians on Saturday, and urged them to ensure justice for her son so that “no other student suffers his fate”.
A day after accusing HRD minister Smriti Irani of lying about the suicide, Radhika met, besides Sonia, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and JD(U) MP K C Tyagi. The MPs assured Radhika that they would be filing a privilege motion against Irani. Prabhakar, convenor of University of Hyderabad’s Joint Action Committee for Social Justice, said, “Sonia Gandhi assured us she will stand with the family till there is justice.” Yechury said all the parties had demanded that a House committee probe the recent incidents at UoH and JNU. The family has also sought an appointment with President Pranab Muk herjee, and is likely to camp in the capital for a couple of days.

The conversation between Sonia and Radhika revolved around the struggle of a single, mother in raising and educating her children. Those present at the meeting said, Radhika gave a detailed account of her life since her husband deserted her. He reportedly had behavioural problems. He turned unreasonable on learning that his wife was a Dalit.
