MUMBAI: The police do not have the right to take the life of those arrested by them, the Bombay high court said on Tuesday, adding there was complete lack of sensitivity and political will to address the issue of custodial deaths.
A division bench of justice VM Kanade and j ustice Dr Shalini Phansalkar Joshi was hearing a suo motu petitions on custodial death, including the one filed by Leonard Valdaris, after t he death of Agnelo Valdaris, 24, who was arrested by the Wadala railway police in April 2014, for allegedly snatching a gold chain.
Advocate Yug Chaudhry, the counsel for Valdaris, told the court that despite an order, CCTVs have not been installed at police stations.
In the previous hearing, the advocate appearing for the state said the first phase of installation has been completed and CCTVs have been installed at 25 police stations.
