BMC has stalled redevelopment of its 16 schools as they do not meet DCR norms
More than 5,000 children have been forced to study in crumbling class rooms after the BMC stayed redevelopment proposals for 16 municipal schools that do not fulfil Development Control Regulation (DCR) requirements.
The schools do not have proper playgrounds or open spaces on the campus as mandated by the DCR rules. They can be redeveloped only if the BMC relaxes the requirements, a step that could take months.
This leaves the parents with only two options: withdraw their children in the middle of the academic year or ignore the safety risks and continue sending them to classrooms with cracked walls and ceiling that is peeling off.
