New Delhi, Oct. 10: The Missionaries of Charity today issued a formal statement confirming it had decided to stop putting children up for adoption, ending what sources said was a five-decade involvement in the process.
The decision was prompted by new government guidelines that have stripped adoption centres of the right to reject any prospective adoptive parent, the head of the Missionaries of Charity in Guwahati had told this newspaper yesterday.
“It’s against our faith to give children up for adoption to single parents,” Sister Della Grace had explained.
Today’s formal statement, issued from Calcutta, said: “It was two months ago that the Missionaries of Charity decided to discontinue all our adoption work in India. We have voluntarily given up our recognised status to run adoption centres.”
