A partial to complete shutdown was observed in Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and some other towns of the region against an Independent MLA’s hosting a “beef party” in the summer capital earlier this week and death of three cows due to poisoning in the State’s Udhampur district.
Shops and other businesses remained shut in several parts of Jammu and neighbouring towns whereas only skeleton transport service was seen plying on the roads. Also, the attendance in government offices was thin mainly due to non availability of public transport. Three-wheeler auto-rickshaws and private cars were, however, plying on the roads as usual. The authorities had declared a holiday in educational institutions in view of the strike call.
The call for Saturday’s protest strike against cow slaughter and the “beef party” was issued by Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers’ Party. Several political and religious groups and Jammu’s bar council endorsed the call. JKNPP members torched effigy of the “beef party”
