23, Feb 2015

The state government’s social justice department on Saturday registered a police case against Kavita Rege, principal of Sathaye College in Vile Parle (East), for allegedly overcharging Dalit students.
The Vile Parle police station has booked her under the relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989) and on the charge of cheating under the Indian penal Code.
As per the complaint, the college was allegedly taking full fees from students of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, even though the education of these students is subsidised by the government. Instead of the nominal Rs500 in fees, the college was collecting Rs18,000-Rs20,000 from them for the past four years. Said Raksha Maharao, senior inspector with Vile Parle police station, “We have registered an FIR. No arrests have been made yet. Investigations are on.”
