Can’t press Centre to ratify UN convention on Torture: SC

The Supreme Court said it won’t compel the central government to ratify the United Nations Convention Against Torture, nor will it direct it to formulate legislation against torture, The Hindu reported. This move came in a PIL seeking an anti-torture law filed by former Union Law Minister Ashwini Kumar. Justice D. Y. Chandrachud said that “the government has to take a political decision on whether it should ratify the treaty.” India’s Law Commission has recommended ratifying the convention and formulating anti-terror legislation that holds the State accountable for any injury its agents perpetrate.
