Boko Haram militants in Nigeria have kidnapped more than 1,000 children in the country’s northeast since 2013, UNICEF has said. UNICEF has said that it has recorded more than 1,000 confirmed cases of kidnapping, but that the true figure could be more. According to UNICEF, over 1,400 schools have been destroyed and at least 2,295 have died in the Boko Haram conflict. In February, one Boko Haram faction abducted more than 100 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi, bringing most of them back a month later. UNICEF’s announcement came the day before the fourth anniversary of Boko Haram’s mass abduction of 276 school girls from Chibok, who were abducted in April 2014. The incident sparked an international outcry. Currently, the whereabouts of around 100 of these girls are unknown; statements from the girls who were rescued and from experts indicate some of them might be dead.
