Mumbai, Oct.

An eyewitness
in the Best Bakery case identified seven accused in court here on
Wednesday as the men who had set fire to the premises. The witness said
the accused had asked the workers who were hiding in the terrace to come
down and tied their hands and legs.

The witness identified
Sanjay Ratilal Thakker, Ravi Rajaram Chauhan, Dinesh Rajbhar, Bahadur
Singh alias Jitu Chavan, Sanabhai Baria, Suresh Vasava and Kamlesh Tadvi
from among the 17 accused in the court. Deposing before special judge A.M.
Thipsay, the witness, who was one of the workers, said the rioters had
come to the bakery in the early hours of March 2. After first assuring the
workers that no harm would come to them, the mob helped them to come down
from the terrace. Then the mob ran berserk, tied their hands and legs and
pushed them inside. The witness said the mob had attacked the workers with
swords. He said he too had been injured, and showed the court injury marks
on his head, neck, chest, right leg and palm. Two of these workers,
Baliram Prasad and Ramesh, later died.

The witness also told the
court that he remembered having seen three women and four children who
were in the bakery dropping dead in the attack.

The witness had told the
court on Tuesday that he had been employed with the bakery for two years
before the incident, and had left for his native village in Uttar Pradesh
immediately afterwards.
