21 arrested after clashes in UP

Twenty one persons have been arrested following communal clashes in Karhal in Mainpuri, that erupted after reports of cow slaughter.As soon as the rumour spread on Friday evening, people in Nagaria village pelted stones, set police jeeps on fire and damaged several other vehicles and shops. Additional forces were rushed in through the night and an undeclared curfew-like situation prevailed in the area.
It was alleged that a cow, which was grazing in a field near the village, was taken away for slaughter and its skin was being removed in a house.The post-mortem report found that the cow had died due to an ailment and the people were removing the skin after its death.
District magistrate Chandrapal Singh said on Saturday that as soon as the news of cow slaughter and subsequent violence spread, the police reached the spot and arrested those removing the skin of the dead cow.
