“BJP MLA Zahira kin can reply to SC panel report”

New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday issued notice to 12 people, including Gujarat BJP MLA Madhu Srivastava and relatives of Zahira Sheikh, a key witness in the Best Bakery case. The SC wants their version on the observations made in the report of the high-level committee which indicted Zahira for her flip-flops in the case.
A bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice H K Sema gave this opportunity to the 12 people so that they can present their defence against the observations made by the committee headed by registrar general of the SC B M Gupta.
The court had appointed the committee in view of the contradictory statements issued by Zahira during the trial as well as the allegations that she was given money by BJP MLA to change her statement.
Appearing for Zahira, senior advocate P N Lekhi questioned the credibility of the report alleging that it was prepared “on the instructions of social activist Teesta Setalvad.”
The court posted the matter for further hearing on November 21.
