Press Release

RTI on Custodial Deaths, Suicides and
Extra Judicial Killings succeeds before GIC (Gujarat Information
Commission)

The Gujarat
Information Commission has, on March 12, 2013 passed an Order
directing the information sought by us over six years ago is made
available forthwith. (Attached is a copy of the order). The CJP
had sought information under the RTI (applications dated
12.9.2007) on killings in police custody/extra judicial
killings/encounter killings and also (RTI application dated
9.10.2007) information on crimes against women, suicides in urban
and rural Gujarat (period 2000-2007).

The GIC in its
Order has stated that the public authority concerned has erred in
“viewing the provisions of Section 24 and notification of the
Government of Gujarat dated 25.10.2005 in a sweeping manner and
thereby denying all statistical informationÂ’s sought by the
appellant.” The Order (attached) states that the office of the DGP
should provide the information within 45 days.
